In this episode of “Ear on Careers,” we are pleased to welcome Dr. Sapna Brahmbhatt, an Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor based in Freehold, New Jersey.
Dr. Brahmbhatt grew up knowing that she wanted to become a doctor or a surgeon. Toward that end, she graduated from Boston College as a biology major and then went on to New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. She did her 5-year residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, which was consisted of 1 year in general surgery and 4 years specifically dedicated to Ear, Nose and Throat. From there, she did a 1 year fellowship at Minnesota Ear, Neck & Head Center in Minneapolis to further her studies of the ear. She is a board certified otolaryngoloist accredited by the American Board of Otolaryngology. In all, she finished with her formal education at age 31, so dedication and perseverance are necessary qualities for aspiring doctors!
Listen as Dr. Brahmbhatt describes what she does as an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, providing care to patients of all ages. She offers our listeners a glimpse into her typical day currently, as well as provides insights into her work life prior to opening her own practice. Along those lines, she shares some stories about working as a resident, what surprises her the most in the field and offers tips for those listeners who want to become a doctor. Dr. Brahmbhatt advises that becoming a doctor is really about answering a calling, and not a path to becoming wealthy. We hope this podcast takes away the fiction of “Grey’s Anatomy” and imparts the reality of what it means to be an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.

In this podcast, Mike Rivera, co-founder, tutor and college counselor with Top-Tier Tutoring, explains the differences among the “alphabet soup” of common college admissions and college placement tests: the SAT, ACT, SAT 2’s and AP exams.

During the podcast, Mike gives information about each type of standardized test, and their various purposes. For example, the SAT got its abbreviation from its original name, the Scholastic Aptitude Test. This college admissions exam tests three subject areas, is offered seven times per year, and the highest score is 2400. By contrast, the ACT, also a general college admissions exam, tests five subject areas and its highest score is 36. SAT 2’s generally are admissions exams as well but may offer college placement. They are one-hour in length and only test one subject matter. Advanced Placement tests, or AP exams, are used by colleges to determine whether college credit will be given for courses taken while in high school.
Listen as Mike goes into detail about each of these exams, and offers information that will help you to decide which test(s) you should take and why you are taking them. The alphabet soup of exams can be overwhelming at first, but with careful organization and preparation, you will be prepared to enter college with your best foot forward.
As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas. Please submit a comment below, send us an email or give us a call at 973-243-1212.
